Hat Kid is the titular main protagonist of Gears for Breakfast's indie platform video game franchise, A Hat in Time.
She is an alien-resembling and dimension-traveling little infant superheroine who embarks through a thrilling quest to collect the scattered Time Pieces, the fuel for her spaceship, so she can return to her home world via her spaceship, and embarks through a long-lasting and glorious adventure after the Mafia Goons interfere with her spaceship. Hat Kid's true name is shrouded in deep mystery up to this day as it is never mentioned in-game, and in the instruction manual, she is basically listed as "Me," due to it being written virtually in first person. Additionally, instead of writing her real name, she writes her name in Korean-like symbols when signing the Snatcher's contracts.
Hat Kid is voiced by Apphia Yu, who also voiced You Watanabe in Love Live! Sunshine!! (in the English dub), Rika Furude in Higurashi: Gou and Sotsu, Tsukasa Shishio from Stone Wars (as a child), and Spinel Sun's false form from Cardcaptor Sakura in the Clear Card Arc through the English dub.
What Makes Her A Shojo Hero?[]
- Heroic/Honorable: Hat Kid saved Mustache Girl from the Mafia Goons, and later from the Mafia Boss (saving a villain twice), and saved the world from Mustache Girl when she tried to conquer it with her newfound control over time, and prevented her from becoming tyrannical, while also saving the lives of all members on the "SS Literally Can’t Sink" ship when it started sinking.
- Kind/Gentle: Hat Kid is very kindhearted and affable to everyone she meets, including some of her enemies ranging from the Mafia Goons to Mustache Girl, going as far as offering the latter a time piece to fight for good in the end of the story (under the player's choice).
- Naive: Hat Kid has extreme naivety, as she does not show a significant grudge against nor expressing feelings of such on her face against her enemies, such as Mustache Girl.
- Optimistic: Hat Kid maintains a positive outlook on life, almost typically expressing a smile on her face and just sporadically showing sorts of negative emotions. Hat Kid is typically shown to be a cheerful kid who is always happy to help other people if required. Even during the most dangerous moments, Hat Kid still attempts to find a way out of it.
- Idealistic: Hat Kid believes that the power of teamwork is powerful enough to take down any threats and store golden goods (time pieces), which is no wonder she teamed up with everyone in Mafia Town and other people in the world, including the Snatcher (despite taking her soul initially), to defeat Mustache Girl during the finale of the game.
- Bubbly: Hat Kid is relentlessly energetic and ready for action, which is backed up my her childlike, energetic and happy-go-lucky personality, though she is not necessarily hyperactive.
- Possesses Plot Armor: TBA
- Believes in the Power of Friendship: Hat Kid believes in the power of friendship as he desires to befriend the Snatcher (despite taking her soul at first, along with his other villainous actions) after defeating him, and even after defeating Mustache Girl, she culminates to offering the latter a time piece to fight for good in the end of the story (under the player's choice), proving trustworthy in the long run.
- Innocent: Hat Kid has never fallen into moral corruption once, making her very immune to moral corruption. While she would go out of her route to perform some morally questionable actions (such as sacrificing several people who were suffering a fate worse than death to the Fire Spirits, all for the sake of getting what she wants), they are wholly subverted and long gone by now, and such actions were all just out of mere misguidance, so those do not give her corrupting factors at all.
- Determined: Hat Kid is determined to help other people or stop any evil force that endangers the world, including Mafia Town.
- Youthful: Being a kid, Hat Kid has a zest for living life to the fullest by going on exciting adventures, exploration and doing whatever she wants, as long as if it does not cause harm.
- Magical: Hat Kid boasts magical powers through the abilities of her hats.
- Is A Cutie: Hat Kid is among the cutest and most adorable fictional characters in the world due to her simplistic, cute and appealing design.
- Short-Tempered: When Hat Kid's fuel (her time pieces) falls out to the world after a Mafia Goon interferes with her spaceship, Hat Kid pouts in anger.
