Hubie is the main protagonist of Don Bluth's eighth animated feature film, The Pebble and the Penguin. He is an adelié penguin and a member of Antartica's rookery of Adelié penguins who's head over heels in love with Marina. Though Hubie hopes to find the perfect pebble to prove his love for her, he must compete against Drake if he wants to win Marina's heart. During his fish-out of water adventure to Antarctica, he meets and later befriends a street-savvy rockhopper penguin named Rocko and learns that the it's not the perfect pebble, but rather the perfect penguin who gets the girl.

He is voiced by Martin Short.

What Makes Him a Shojo Hero?[]

  • Heroic/Honorable: He saves Marina not only from becoming Drake's mate, but from facing exilement from the Rookery and starving to death over her failure to choose a mate.
  • Kind/Gentle: Hubie is very sweet-hearted and nice to everyone.
  • Bubbly: Though he is rather mellow, he has his fair share of moments of being energetic and excitable.
  • Compassionate: To Marina and Rocko. Hubie is ultimately a caring soulmate to Marina, who loves her for who she is. Even though Rocko was rough and dismissive of him at first, Hubie still treats him with kindness, as well as encouraging him to dream and emotionally supporting him.
  • Clumsy: Hubie is highly prone to tripping over his own feet to the point his clumsy nature is a running gag.
  • Socially Awkward: He is painfully shy, that and he frequently stutters. Hubie also acts embarrassed and bashful around Marina.
  • Naive/Absent-Minded: Hubie is idealistic that he has a hopeful and unrealistic view of love and life, that and he is unsavvy about the world beyond his rookery.
  • Has a Crush on Someone: Hubie has romantic feelings for Marina.
  • Optimistic: No matter the downfalls, Hubie does not easily let life bring him down and remained positive.
  • Innocent: Hubie always had a pure heart even after being subject to abuse and torment.
  • Idealistic: Hubie insists he'll make it back home in time to Antarctica before the full moon mating ceremony, despite Rocko saying it's unlikely.
  • Determined: Though he lost in the first fight against Drake, Hubie gets back on his toes to defeat him and rescue Marina.
  • Romantic: Was willing to find the perfect pebble to give to Marina to show her how much he loves her.
  • Believes in the Power of Friendship/Love: Hubie comes back home and wins his fight against Drake thanks to his friendship with Rocko and his romantic love for Marina, hence the power of love and friendship.
  • Possesses Plot Armor: Had Rocko not intervene to save his life time after time, Hubie would've gotten killed through indigestion from either the Leopard Seal or the Killer Whales.
  • Wears Bright Colors: Hubie wears a red winter hat and a yellow scarf.
  • Insecure: Hubie initially believed Marina could not possibly love someone like him, but her kindness to him proved otherwise. He was initially weak-willed, timid, and lacked self-confidence. After he was taken under Rocko's wing, he grows as a person and learns to stand up for himself.
  • Pacifistic: Hubie is pacifistic by nature; he is visibly uncomfortable with violence and aggression.
  • Is a Cutie: An adorable penguin who is sweet, innocent, soft-spoken, kind, and is among the cutest characters in The Pebble and the Penguin.
