I wish I had to the power to erase witches before they're born! Every single witch, from the past, present and future, everywhere. I don't care what I become. All the magical girls who believed in hope and fought witches, I don't want them to suffer or cry anymore. I want them to be at peace, and if that goes against the laws of the universe, then I'll just rewrite those laws. That's the only thing I want. It's what I wish for. Now, grant my wish, Incubator!
~ Madoka Kaname's wish to create the Law of Cycles.

Madoka Kaname is the central protagonist of Puella Magi Madoka Magica. She's a young girl who was also her middle school nurse's aid before becoming a magical girl. She is voiced by Christine Marie Cabanos and Aoi Yuuki in the English and Japanese dubs respectively.

What Makes Her a Shojo Hero?[]

  • Heroic/Honorable: She rewrote all of reality so witches were never born, which meant all magical girls could finally have peace.
  • Kind/Gentle: Is kind to her classmates and even rescued Kyubey, the anime's main antagonist.
  • Pacifistic: Stopped Homura and Sayaka from fighting each other by sending the latter's soul gem far away. Before this, Madoka tried proposing a peaceful resolution to Sayaka via her and Kyoko teaming up to take down witches.
  • Bubbly: She starts the series off as a cheerful and peppy young girl who's hardly seen without a smile.
  • Compassionate: Hugged Sayaka, who learned that she had became an empty shell tied to her soul gem, no different from a zombie. She later confronted Kyubey about how he viewed humans as disposable, showing she doesn't see her friends as objects, but as real people like herself.
  • Optimistic: Has a bright outlook on life, such as considering it wonderful if someone could go around helping others, and telling people to keep having hope.
  • Innocent: She's soft-spoken, insecure, and polite, though remarkably mature for her age as her mother notes.
  • Idealistic: Her wish at the end of the initial series was to reconstruct the entire universe into a better, happier, more idealistic place.
  • Socially Awkward: She has moments where she expresses embarrassment, like when she showed her costume drawing.
  • Naive: One of the traits that she has stated to dislike about herself.
  • Determined: Even after everything she's gone through, Madoka never loses her desire to make the world a better place and help others.
  • Insecure: She has low self-esteem due to not being school smart, relying on others, and accomplishing little in her life.
  • Wears Bright Colors: Her magical girl uniform consists of a pink puffy dress adorned with rose patterns.
  • Pigtails/Long Hair: She's almost always seen with her hair done up in two short pigtails. And in her Goddess Form, it becomes as long as she is tall.
  • Unnatural Hair Color: She has pink hair.
  • Insecure: Her strong sense of selflessness and desire to help others is fed by her own lack of self-confidence stemming from her perceived lack of academic or athletic skills.
  • Magical: Well... she's a magical girl. It's only natural that this belongs here.
  • Is a Cutie: She's a huggable young girl with an equally adorable personality to boot.
  • Age 10-16: She is 14 years old when Kyubey finds her with the intention of forming a contract with her.
