Tohru Sohma (née Honda) is the main protagonist of the anime/manga series, Fruits Basket. She is the wife of Kyo Sohma and the mother of Hajime Sohma as well as his two siblings.
What Makes Her A Shojo Heroine?[]
- Heroic/Honorable: She was the one to lift the curse on the Sohma Family that they had all been bound to for so long.
- Kind/Gentle: She was able to get along with each member of the Sohma Family no matter how rude or selfish they may have appeared to be at first-glance with her kindness and nurturing personality.
- Bubbly: A cheerful young girl who sees the good in everything.
- Compassionate: She forgave Akito Sohma for her abusive treatment of the rest of the family and influenced her to change her ways for the better.
- Clumsy: She's so clumsy that Uotani states a man at her work reminded her of Tohru because he was similarly clumsy.
- Socially Awkward: She's ridiculously clumsy and quirky, though she easily manages to endear herself to just about everyone she meets partially because of it.
- Naive/Absent-Minded: She's incredibly idealistic and overly-trusting to the point of being rather gullible.
- Has a Crush on Someone: While she attracts the attention of multiple characters throughout the series, she eventually falls for Kyo and even marries him.
- Optimistic: As she says herself, "Sometimes living can be hard! But it’s only because we’re alive that we can make each other laugh, cry, and be happy!"
- Innocent: She has the innocence of a child, always lookign for the best in others and nearly any innuendo or form of subtext going right over her head.
- Sensitive: She's quick to tears and suffers from self-esteem issues she keeps a secret from most people.
- Idealistic: Strongly believes that there's good in everyone and is willing to try and reach out to Akito even when the latter is actively threatening her with a knife.
- Determined: Even seeing Akito in the middle of a psychotic breakdown upon realizing that the members of the Sohma Family are abandoning her doesn't stop Tohru from approaching and trying to help her.
- Romantic: She's very lovey-dovey herself, not to mention how numerous members of the Sohma family develop feelings for her rather quickly.
- Believes in the Power of Friendship/Love: Her love for everyone and willingness to form friendships and bonds with others is what allowed Kyo to learn to control his temper and become nicer and more compassionate towards others and Akito to redeem herself and become a benevolent head of the Sohma Family.
- Wears Bright Colors: Is usually depicted donning a blue dress.
- Pigtails/Long Hair: Her hair reaches her waist.
- Insecure: She has low self-esteem and struggles intensely with the grief ensuing from the death of her mother, both of which being things that she uses her upbeat nature to hide.
- Is a Crybaby: It's not hard to bring her to tears, as even being gifted a swimsuit proves to be enough to cause her to start weeping profusely.
- Pacifistic: When Kyo enters his true form, she ends up being the one to calm him down
- Is a Cutie: She's unquestionably cute as a button in both appearance and personality.
- Age 10-16: She is between the ages of 16 and 17 in the original anime and manga.
